Biggest Poker Tournament in NSW History

With a prize pool of over $1 million (and possibly as high as $1.5 million) , the APT Sydney 2013, is the largest poker tournament in the history of New South Wales. The tournament is the main event of the Star Summer Series, which is being presented by the National Poker League (NPL), the Asian Poker Tour (the APT), and The Star Casino. The tournament begins on December 5 and runs through December 8.

The NPL has hosted poker events in Australia since 2010, and they now claim a base of over 350,000 players. They host over 500 Texas holdem tournaments weekly in multiple licensed venues throughout Australia. They’re responsible for over $5 million in poker tournament winnings a year. They’re also the first Australian poker league to host a $500,000 event outside of a casino. At least 600 players are expected to play in the APT Sydney 2013.

Joe Hachem is the spokesperson for the NPL, and he is reportedly expecting this tournament to be an outstanding opportunity for amateur poker players to compete with some of the best players in the world.

The official site for the National Poker League (http://www.npl.com.au/) includes information about this upcoming event as well as several other upcoming events, including the Marrickville Million VI on December 1.

The Asian Poker Tour is the top poker event sponsor in Asia, organizing tournaments in Cambodia, India, Macau, the Philippines, and South Korea. The APT Sydney 2013 is their first event in Australia. Details about the APT’s upcoming events can be found at their official website, http://www.theasianpokertour.com/, which also features a photo gallery and results from previous events.

Multiple opportunities to win an entry into the event are available. One option is to play in NPL regional tournaments. Another option is to play in the satellite tournaments available at The Star. As the APT Sydney 2013 gets closer, direct buy-ins to the tournament will also be available.

This is the final event of The Star Casino’s Summer Series, which begins on November 27 and ends on December 8.

Australia is home to multiple famous professional poker players, including Joe Hachem, who we mentioned earlier in this article. Other famous poker pros from Australia include Billy Argyros, Gary Benson, Tony G, Mel Judah, Jeff Lisandro, Andrew Scott, and Mark Vos. All of these players have significant earnings from poker tournament winnings, with Joe Hachem being especially notable for his lifetime tournament winnings of over $11 million. Tony G. is also notable for his lifetime tournament winnings of over $4 million.
