History of Carbon Poker
Carbon Poker was established in 2007 and is licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC), which is based out of Canada. Who actually owns Carbon Poker is not publicly known, though some rumors say it may be owned by a reputable land-based casino operator out of Denmark; however, KGC reports that Carbon is owned by Poker.com.
Carbon Poker is part of the Merge Gaming Network based out of Australia and is US-friendly. As part of the Merge Gaming Network, Carbon shares players with other skins. Merge is ranked in the top 15 poker networks in the industry.
The foundations of Carbon Poker began in 2005 in Poker.com. When Poker.com made the decision to branch out and start its own poker room, Carbon Poker was born and joined the then new Merge Network, growing quickly over the years into a thriving US accepting poker site. When many poker sites that withdrew from the US market following the UIGEA, mainly PartyPoker, Carbon Poker did the opposite, establishing itself as a US friendly site happy to take the traffic PartyPoker and others left behind.
In February 2009 Carbon Poker rewarded the biggest Bad Beat Jackpot in the history of online poker, paying out more than $1 million to fortunate player with the losing hand.
In April 2010, PlayersOnly and Sportsbook.com moved to Merge from the much bigger Cake Poker Network, instantly increasing Carbon’s traffic by the thousands.
In July 2010, Carbon Poker signed Shannon Elizabeth, film and television actress and poker player, who finished in 3rd place in the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship and has cashed four times at the World Series of Poker. The beautiful Elizabeth remained the face of Carbon Poker for 2010.
Even after Black Friday on April 15th, 2011 and Blue Monday six weeks later when a majority of US-friendly poker sites were stopped dead in their tracks by the Department of Justice and even after rumors that the DOJ was coming after Merge Network sites, Carbon Poker remained active in the US Internet poker market, avoiding a DOJ domain seizure by changing its web address to carbonpoker.ag. This fact is the main contributing factor to the site’s growth and successful run. In fact, following Black Friday, Carbon Poker traffic swelled by 75%, making them the largest US poker site.
In June of 2011, Carbon Poker and other sites on the Merge Network were forced to close their virtual doors to new player sign-ups from the US for a mere two months in order to re-organize internally so they could handle the flocks of new player signups, though existing players were allowed to continue playing as normal. They re-opened to new US players in August of 2011.
